Square Bear's Top 75 Project

Around this time of year, a lot of people tend to make new year's resolutions and I'm no exception. However, whereas most peoples' resolutions are to lose weight or to give up smoking, mine is a little different. This year I have resolved to get a track released into the top 75 UK singles chart by the end of the year. A little ambitious maybe, but I feel my music is now comparable to a lot of chart tracks and as I already have a club release under my belt I feel that I have a pretty good chance.

This page will record my achievements and thoughts this year as I aim for my goal. It may end up horribly wrong and I may give up early in the year or I might suprise everyone (including myself) and actually make it into the charts! Hopefully, if it works out I might go higher than 75 and end up in the top 40 or even the top 20 but I'm going to try and be sensible and aim for a reasonable target. Likewise, if I crash and burn, at least I can say I gave it my best shot.

February

Feb 1st - Ah well, it looks like Whigfield didn't like my song as the deadline for submissions has been extended. Still, it was worth a try. I'm expecting a few setbacks along the way so I'm not too disappointed.

Feb 2nd - Asked to remix a second track for Surmise called If Only. I've been given a link to the vocals, so I'll download them and get started.

Feb 3rd - Found a record label in Belgium that is looking for trance music to release, so I've sent in some of mine. Let's hope I have more luck than Whigfield.

Feb 4th - FANTASTIC NEWS!!!! It looks like I was giving up too soon as I've heard today that Alone In The Crowd has been forwarded to Whigfield and her record label for their consideration. There's still no guarantee of anything yet, but it means that at least she will hear it and will hopefully like it. Keep your fingers crossed for me. This could be it.

Feb 5th - Surmise are planning on releasing My Love around June this year and will be including my mix. They've invited me to their Manchester studios to polish the remix ready for inclusion on the CD single, so I should be going across there within the next month or two.

Feb 6th - WOOHOO!!!! Is it good news that comes in threes or bad? I'm not sure, but for me it's good news as I've just found out that Arctic Dawn has been forwarded on by quality assurance to the Belgian record label. I don't know any more details at this moment. That's Whigfield, Surmise and now the Belgian label all in one week. Things are looking good for me.

Feb 7th - Started work on the If Only remix for Surmise. I'm just toying with a few ideas for it at the moment. I might make it a more euphoric trance remix with plenty of strings and atmosphere. I'll see how it develops.

Feb 8th - It looks like there's a chance that Surmise may be splitting up. It appears that they have had problems for quite a while with hackers, hate mail etc. and have finally had enough. So it looks like my remixes for them won't see light of day. I'll continue working on If Only though, in case they change their minds.

Feb 9th - Surmise appear to be sticking together after all. So I'll continue with the If Only remix for them.

Feb 10th - Received an email from a German record company who had visited the site. They said they were very interested in my music especially Tears In The Rain and would like some of my music for their label. Pretty good eh?

Feb 11th - I became an uncle today! My brother's wife gave birth to a baby boy called Alex Jay. He weighs 9 pounds and 15 ounces, so he's quite a big lad. Mother and baby are both doing well.

Feb 12th - Continued the If Only remix. It's coming on quite well I feel. I'll have to upload a sample for the band and see if they like it.

Feb 13th - Yikes! It's Friday the thirteenth. Hope you're not superstitious! Did a little more work on If Only.

Feb 14th - Valentines Day. I'm off out tonight to see a hard house DJ. I might give him a demo disc with some of my harder tracks on it. Got to keep trying.

Feb 15th - Asked a DJ at a disco/karaoke night to play Arctic Dawn. It went down really well. He told me that a couple of people thought it was by Paul van Dyk!

Alex Jay - My first nephew.
Alex Jay Worswick
- I'm an uncle! He's 9 pounds 15 ounces, which is pretty big.

Feb 16th - Did a little more with If Only. It's pretty much finished now and I just need to tidy a few things on it before I let Surmise hear it. Hope they like it as much as the other remix I did for them.

Feb 17th - Only had chance to work on If Only for a short while.

Feb 18th - Started work on a new track for an internet competition. They want music that depicts a beach scene. YIKES!! I'll finish the Surmise remix off tomorrow hopefully then work on this.

Feb 19th - Went to see my new nephew. He woke up for a bit while we were there and I got to hold him. Awwww!

Feb 20th - Found a new record label who sign the kind of music I make. You can't have too many contacts.

Feb 21st - Received another email from the German label who are interested in Tears In The Rain. Trouble is, that the rights to it are signed to Baltic Music. I've been in touch with Baltic Music to see if we can work something out.

Feb 22nd - Hmm... found out that someone may be downloading my music and passing it off as their own. While part of me is flattered, I mainly feel angry. I'm all for people downloading my music and playing it but at least have the decency to credit me for my own work!

Feb 23rd - I got a reply back from Baltic Music to say that Tears In The Rain is now owned by MICrec publishing from Latvia. I've been given a contact address so I've emailed them and am hoping for a favourable reply.

Feb 24th - Sent an email to Feel So Real Productions (FSRP). They legally remix other artists' work such as Members of Mayday, Do and work with labels like Deviant, Nebula and others. I've asked if there are any opportunities for me there and given them a link to my Beyonce remix. Hopefully, they'll like it and get back in touch.

Feb 25th - Got a reply back from FSRP saying that they had "heard plenty about me" and they were interested. They've given me an address to send a CD of my music to. I hope the "heard plenty about me" was a good thing.

Feb 26th - Received an email from another person who had been approached by GPLK Inc. asking if I'd heard anything. Unfortunately, the original mailshot from them appeared to be spam so I didn't pay them much attention. It would be interesting to see if they are a genuine outfit though.

Feb 27th - Still waiting for a reply back from MICrec publishing (Latvia). It's not looking good but I'm hoping that he's just busy and hasn't simply wiped my mail.

Feb 28th - Had a weekend away from music. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Feb 29th - A nice relaxing Sunday with friends. In England, the 29th of February is traditionally a time when girls can propose to men. I decided to avoid my girlfriend today (only joking)!
