Square Bear's Top 75 Project

Around this time of year, a lot of people tend to make new year's resolutions and I'm no exception. However, whereas most peoples' resolutions are to lose weight or to give up smoking, mine is a little different. This year I have resolved to get a track released into the top 75 UK singles chart by the end of the year. A little ambitious maybe, but I feel my music is now comparable to a lot of chart tracks and as I already have a club release under my belt I feel that I have a pretty good chance.

This page will record my achievements and thoughts this year as I aim for my goal. It may end up horribly wrong and I may give up early in the year or I might suprise everyone (including myself) and actually make it into the charts! Hopefully, if it works out I might go higher than 75 and end up in the top 40 or even the top 20 but I'm going to try and be sensible and aim for a reasonable target. Likewise, if I crash and burn, at least I can say I gave it my best shot.

March

Mar 1st - The 29th has passed, so hopefully if Whigfield liked my song I should be hearing from her label. I have my fingers and toes crossed for this one. This would certainly put me on the map if it comes off.

Mar 2nd - I'm still waiting for a response back from MICrec publishing regarding the German label releasing Tears In The Rain. I'll give them until Friday then I'll mail them back.

Mar 3rd - Spent most of the day trying to re-install a load of software on my rust bucket of a PC after it crashed. It's served me well as I've had it nearly 6 years but I really must treat myself to a new one.

Mar 4th - The fair came to town today. It's full of teenage kids who would be an ideal target for my music so I put a few tracks on a CD and handed it into one of the guys who was operating one of the rides. They have loud music blaring out so it might as well be mine eh? I'll have to sneak along on Saturday and see if he's playing any of it.

Mar 5th - Still no email from MICrec so I emailed them back again as a gentle reminder. I also managed to get my PC back up and running. Well, when I say running, it's more of a gentle stroll really. I was fortunate enough to have made backups of most of my music files beforehand, so I've only lost a few things.

Mar 6th - Went back to the fair this afternoon and to my suprise, the guy operating the ride that I met the other day was playing NRGeneration. I don't think anyone was paying much attention to it though but at least it got heard by a couple of hundred more people. I have a theory that the more a track is played, the more it becomes accepted. It's like when you hear a song for the first time, you're maybe not too keen but as you hear it again and again, it becomes lodged in your head, so the more times my music is played the better. There's also the theory that the guy saw me in the fair and thought it polite to play my CD, but I'm going to believe he played it because he liked it. hehe!

The fair's in town
- which is an ideal place to get my music heard by a couple of hundred more people.

Mar 7th - Put the finishing touches to a "Beach Boys" style track I'm working on for a competition. The only thing I need to do now is to sing on it and there's no way I'm doing that while anyone else is in the house. I'll probably do it early next week sometime.

Mar 8th - Bought a new microphone as my old one packed in ages ago. I just need to find a time when I'm on my own in the house to sing the lyrics to it.

Mar 9th - Pah! I took some time off and came home early to record the track. I got a little bit done and was interrupted by visitors. I'll have to finish it off tomorrow instead. From what I recorded so far though, I'm glad I have my Autotune program as it was a little shaky to say the least. I think I'll leave the singing to Cami in future!

 Loona
- From a scene in the video for DJ Sammy's Sunlight

Mar 10th - I finished my "Beach Boys" track for the competition but I hope the other entrants excuse my singing. I don't know if I'll upload it on the main page as it doesn't show my music in a particularly good light. I couldn't even fix my attempt at singing with Autotune haha!

Mar 11th - Has anyone heard of a singer called Loona? She's worked with DJ Sammy and I believe she sang on Boys Of Summer and Sunlight. Well, it looks like she's after some new material to release. I'd best get some of mine in for her to listen to. That would be good publicity.

Mar 12th - Went round town with a few demo CDs to hand out to a new batch of DJs who seemed to have sprouted up just lately. It's probably the only way I'll get my "unofficial" remixes heard as there's no way any of these will be officially released.

Mar 13th - Decided to set up a street team. This is basically a group of people who will go around clubs and places for me handing out free CDs to DJs and clubbers, as I can't cover the country on my own. This will spread my music to a larger group of people than I can do by myself and will get me a lot more publicity.
I decided to set this up after two girls from Sheffield emailed me offering to do this and in return for their services, I will give the team free Square Bear merchandise and VIP access to any future events I am involved with. I would like to say a big thanks to Kelly and Sam for offering to do this. That's very kind of you girls.

Mar 14th - Now my PC's back up and running, I can prepare a demo CD to send to Feel So Real Productions (FSRP). I don't know if you remember them from last month but they are a group who legally remix tracks for both new and established artists and were interested in listening to my music with a view to giving me remix work.

Mar 15th - Still heard nothing from MICrec publishing regarding me giving the German label rights to release Tears In The Rain so I guess that avenue is closed to me getting into the Top 75. Ah well, I expected a few downfalls.

Mar 16th - Got an email from Michelle in Bournemouth. She's a regular reader of this section and wants to be part of my street team. That will be Sheffield and Bournemouth covered now. If anyone else who likes my music wants to be part of it please contact me at Street Team. Cheers Michelle.
Today, Sheffield and Bournemouth. Soon the whole world! MUAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!! oops sorry! :)

Mar 17th - Pah! Regular readers will be wondering what has happened with the updates as this page has been static since the 13th. My PC packed in once again and it's taken me the best part of 4 nights trying to get it limping along again. I've decided to get a new PC. It's something I've been putting off for the best part of a year now but I think it's finally time.

Mar 18th - Worked on the demo CD for FSRP. I'm going to enhance a few of my early tracks with a little more stereo work and I'll probably re-master a few of them to help them sound their best. My work with FSRP will depend on this CD so I need it to be the best it can.

Mar 19th - I've heard nothing from Whigfield's label yet and it appears as though my chance of getting into the charts that way is also fading. Hopefully, they are still listening to the submitted tracks and deciding which to include on the album but I'm not going to hold my breath. That's two routes that are looking unlikely now and I'm beginning to think that this project is going to fail.

Mar 20th - Ok, if I've got any chance of getting into the Top 75, I'm going to need to be a bit more pro-active. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come to me, i.e. Whigfield, Loona etc I'm going to have to get out there and start sending demos to labels. I have a few contacts to send them to but I need to make sure my demo CD is up to the job.

Mar 21st - Went to see a local live band tonight (Lowrider). They have a pretty big local following and it was good to watch them perform. I'm sure I'll be terrified if I ever have to perform live. Hopefully, the crowd would be too busy looking and listening to my singer to bother about me.

Lowrider - One of Goole's more popular local bands. They even supported Killing Joke at one point.

Mar 22nd - Just about finished my demo CD for FSRP. I need to tidy a couple more tracks up then I'll get it in the post. I must buy some more Jiffy bags tomorrow.

Mar 23rd - Got broadband today!! After playing with it for a while, I can't understand why I didn't get this sooner. Everything is almost immediately displayed for me now and it will make working with music on the net so much easier. I'll still design this site with dial-up in mind (apart from the fancy animation on the home page) as I realise not everyone has access to broadband.

Mar 24th - Cami has put me in touch with a guy in Los Angeles who is looking for 10 dance tracks to feature in the soundtrack of a DVD. I've sent him a link to my stuff and so let's hope he likes it.

Mar 25th - The DVD guy mailed me back to say he had listened to my tracks and wanted me to write all 10 tracks for the DVD!! The only trouble is that he wants them all in a kind of hard house style like Benny Benassi and needs 5 of them ready by 10th April!! I've had to write back and say that I won't be able to do that. Ah well.

Mar 26th - I remember that my track Rainbow Chaser went down pretty well with the visitors at my old mp3.com page. It's a good trancey number. I'll rework that and see if anyone is interested in it.

Mar 27th - Went to listen to a hard house DJ. About 75% of his set consisted of those "donk-donk" bassline type records. It's ok for half an hour or so but all night was a bit much. If that's the style that people are wanting then I don't think I'll be doing that. I'm going to see a live band tomorrow night. I don't know their name but I think it's only the second time they've performed live. I might be able to pick up a few tips on avoiding stage fright.

Mar 28th - Hmm.. well I now know how NOT to carry myself on stage after seeing the band last night. The lead singer was always facing his fellow band members and never looked at the crowd once. He was singing from a sheet of paper so it looked like he hadn't learned the songs. Also, they never said what each song was called and between each track they had a 5 minute tuning up session. It was very amateur I'm afraid and the crowd didn't seem too impressed. Neither was I.

Mar 29th - A remix of Firestorm has been invited to appear on a compilation CD. I think it's just going to be more about the publicity than any real money as it appears to be a fairly small project. I'll have a think.

Mar 30th - Given my permission for the compilation to include Firestorm. It's all good publicity for me and it appears the CD will have some contact details on, so hopefully it should attract a few more people to my music.

Mar 31st - Well that's the end of a quarter of the year and I'm not a lot closer to my dream. I've had a couple of near misses though so let's hope the other 9 months bring me more luck.
